Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ Becomes First Album To Go Platinum 30 TIMES!

Michael Jackson‘s Thriller album has officially come the first album to be certified platinum over 30 times in U.S. sales. Announced by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the album has top more than 30 million sales in the America alone and is officially the biggest selling album of all time.

Worldwide, Michael Jackson takes the cake as the best selling artist of all time, totaling over 100 million album sales for “Thriller” and over 1 BILLION sales from his music catalog.

“RIAA has awarded Gold & Platinum records on behalf of the music business for nearly 60 years, but this is the first time an artist has crossed the 30X multi-Platinum plateau,” RIAA Chairman and CEO Cary Sherman said in a statement. “We are honored to celebrate the unique status of ‘Thriller’ in Gold & Platinum history. What an exceptional achievement and testament to ‘Thriller’s’ enduring spot in our hearts and musical history.”

“100 million albums and counting; there has never been a phenomenon like ‘Thriller,’” John Branca and John McClain, co-executors of the Estate of Michael Jackson, said in a joint statement. “Michael opened the floodgates of his creativity, explored emotional depths and pushed the boundaries of sonic innovation. In the process, he breached destructive barriers in the music industry and literally united the world through his music: there isn’t a place on this planet that hasn’t been exhilarated by the music of Michael Jackson. Thirty years after its release, ‘Thriller’ continues to be a revelation.”

When released on Nov. 30, 1982, Thriller became certified platinum two months after it’s release. BUT buy Oct 30, 1984 it was already certified 20 times platinum. Meaning the album sales picked up so much that he was almost going platinum with Thriller each month. Two months after the death of Michael Jackson, the album hit 29-times platinum on Aug. 21, 2009.

Michael Jackson’s music is truly a sound that will never be forgetten and honestly is also the best artist to play when at any type of gathering, or just want to bring people of different backgrounds together to understand we are all the same.
